Definitions
| Full Weight Bearing (FWB) or Weight Bear as Tolerated (WBAT) | Are interchangeable terms meaning: full (100%) body weight is allowed on the specified limb. A gait aid is not required but may be used to assist with mobility, pain control or balance. |
| Heel Weight Bearing (HWB) | Allowed to full weight bear (100%) but only on the heel of the specified limb. |
| Partial Weight Bearing (PWB/PWB %) | Partial (up to 50% unless otherwise instructed) body weight is allowed on the specified limb. This is prescribed when excessive weight bearing may lead to injury (or re-injury). A gait aid is required if the prescription relates to the lower limb. |
| Touch Weight Bearing (TWB) | Minimal (up to 10% unless otherwise instructed) body weight is allowed. The patient can rest foot/toes on ground for balance but not for weight bearing. Gait aid is required. |
| Non Weight Bearing (NWB) | No (0%) body weight is to be taken on the limb. The affected lower limbs must not touch the floor when transferring or ambulating. A gait aid is required to enable the patient to hop or pivot if the lower limb is affected. If the patient is unable to do so a hoist will be required for transfers. |
