The Western Health Orthopaedic Department provides orthopaedic care to Melbourne’s western suburbs. We are one of the largest and busiest orthopaedic departments in Victoria, working across Footscray, Sunshine, Williamstown and Joan Kirner.
We treat adults and children with problems of the bones, joints and muscles – from fractures and sports injuries to arthritis and joint replacement. Alongside clinical work, the Department runs a substantial research program and trains the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Subspecialty Care
Consultant surgeons work in subspecialty teams covering hip and knee, sports knee, foot and ankle, upper limb, paediatrics and adult trauma. Profiles for every surgeon are on the Our Team page.

Research and Training
The Department prospectively collects patient-reported outcomes on its hip and knee replacement patients out to five years and beyond, runs randomised trials, and works closely with Victoria University and the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science at Sunshine Hospital. Western Health is an accredited Australian Orthopaedic Association training site for orthopaedic registrars and hosts four subspecialty fellowships and an international travelling fellowship. Details are on the Fellowships page.
