The EFORT International Travelling Fellowship is a 12 month program in total hip and knee replacement, shared between a European centre and the Western Health Orthopaedic Department. The fellow spends the first six months in Europe with Professor Hofstätter, then completes the second six months in Melbourne with Professor Phong Tran.
Each half of the year includes about a week with co-host surgeons, giving the fellow a wider view of techniques, implants and ways of running a joint replacement service.
At Western Health the fellow joins Professor Tran’s hip and knee practice, which includes direct anterior approach hip replacement, and takes part in the Department’s clinics, meetings and research program.
Selection. The EFORT Foundation runs the application process and reviews eligible candidates. Professor Tran takes part in the final stage of selection, expected by November 2026.
Funding. The fellowship grant is paid by the EFORT Foundation for the European half and through the Australian Orthopaedic Association for the Australian half.
Paperwork. Western Health arranges hospital credentialing and the documents needed for the Australian half.
Apply through the EFORT Foundation. Questions about the Australian half can go to lidia.carbone@wh.org.au. Other Western Health fellowships are listed on the Fellowships page.
