The Western Health Orthopaedic Department offers subspecialty fellowship training across our Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown sites. We are one of the largest and busiest orthopaedic departments in Victoria, serving Melbourne’s western suburbs – one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia. Fellows see high case volumes and a broad, unfiltered public hospital case mix.
Fellowships run for six to twelve months depending on the program.
Anterior Hip and Hip Arthroscopy
Direct anterior approach hip replacement and hip arthroscopy, with additional exposure to kinematically aligned techniques.
Foot and Ankle Surgery
Elective and trauma foot and ankle surgery across the Western Health campuses.
Sports Knee
Sports knee surgery including ligament reconstruction, with hip arthroscopy exposure.
Advanced Arthroplasty – Robotics & Revision
Robotic-assisted primary arthroplasty and complex revision hip and knee surgery.
Research
All fellows participate in the unit’s research program. The department has an established research collaboration with Victoria University and the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS), with a dedicated research coordinator supporting fellow and registrar projects. The department prospectively collects patient outcome data, which fellows can use to generate clinical outcome research.
Both accredited fellowships require a minimum of one paper prepared for publication during the term.
How to apply
Applications are welcome year round. Each fellowship page lists its supervisors and its requirements. Send a curriculum vitae and a covering letter to lidia.carbone@wh.org.au, stating the fellowship and the term you are applying for.
