Background

The Orthopaedic Unit at Western Health is a large and complex team operating across 3 sites, with many Consultants, Registrars, HMOs, Interns and Allied Health and Support Staff helping the unit run effectively. This can be a busy environment, with lots of jobs needing to be done collaboratively to ensure we provide efficient and best care to Orthopaedic patients in the west.

Interns and HMOs are an integral part of the team which the rest of the unit rely on to ensure things run smoothly. This requires interns and residents to be able to ‘hit the ground running’, and start working effectively from their first week on the unit. The Unit has recognised this, and has introduced a Induction and Orientation session with one of the Orthopaedic Registrars at some point within their first week on the rotation

Process

Currently, the Intern/HMO Induction and Orientation session is run by Jeremy Abetz, one of the Unaccredited Orthopaedic Registrars

In the week leading up to a new group of Interns or HMOs starting an Orthopaedic Rotation, one of the Orthopaedic Registrars will contact the new junior staff to organise a 2-3 hour time sometime within their first week on Orthopaedics to have their Induction, at a time that fits with the Registrar’s roster

The Induction is generally run at Footscray, with Williamstown and Sunshine HMOs having the option to either attend in person or join via zoom

If HMOs are otherwise not rostered to work on the day of their Induction Session, both Prof Tran (Head of Orthopaedic Unit) and Hien Nguyen (Director of Medical Workforce) have approved for overtime to be paid.

Where possible, we will also try and arrange for new interns / HMOs to meet the Intern/HMO Supervisor, Ms Stacey Cole, at some point during their first week with the unit

Content

During the Orientation Program, we run through examples of how to do commons tasks that interns and HMOs are required to do during their Orthopaedic Rotation. This is generally done by sitting at a computer and working through examples together using mock patients are ficitious scenarios. The aim of the session is for it to be friendly and informal, allowing for HMOs to ask any questions that they may have, and explore any other topics they might have questions about.
