Adult Trauma

The adult trauma service manages fractures and musculoskeletal injuries for Melbourne’s west, with trauma operating and fracture clinics based at Footscray Hospital. Older patients with hip fractures are co-managed with the orthogeriatric team, and suitable simple fractures are managed through the Virtual Fracture Clinic.

Training

Trauma is part of every Western Health fellowship, with fellows taking part in trauma lists, fracture clinics and the on-call roster. See the Fellowships page.

Research

The Department has compared models of perioperative care for older people with hip fractures, studied wound closure techniques in proximal femoral fractures, and tested recumbent cycling to aid recovery after hip fracture. It also contributed to CROSSFIRE, the randomised trial of plating against closed reduction for distal radius fractures in older people, and the foot and ankle team continues to publish on Lisfranc, calcaneal and syndesmotic injuries.
